We are pleased to introduce young brand ambassador, Luke Wiles, a 14 year old ‘Young Gun’ with the passion and enjoyment for polo that Hurlingham Polo 1875 represent. At only 14 years old, Luke has earned a handicap goal of 1, and it is not only Luke’s dedication but also his enjoyment of the sport that has earned him this status. Luke tells us, “Polo has been a major component in my life now for quite a while and in that time I have been honoured to have played with some amazing players and won some fantastic tournaments.”
This polo season, Luke’s been busy playing everything from kid’s polo tournaments to 15 goal matches. Some of Luke’s most recent wins in tournaments this season include:
Despite having such a successful season, Luke recalls his proudest achievements as “winning the Copa Potrillitos (twice) with Indios Chapaleufu, playing (and winning) at Palermo Number one ground and winning the Challenge Cup 2016 with Apes Hill.”
It is not only Luke’s dedication to the sport that earns him his wins. Luke’s love of polo is no less than inspiring; when asked what he enjoys most on-field, Luke replied, “On the field I love running the ball to goal and trying to score goals, but above all I love walking onto the pitch with seven other players all with the same burning desire to win as you, that is one of the best things about polo is that everyone wants to win.”
Luke epitomises what it means to love and respect the game of kings, making him the ideal brand ambassador for the king of games.
GET TO KNOW LUKE
1. If you could spend the day with anyone in the world, who would you choose?
That's a tough one really as there are so many sportsmen who are incredible in what they do, but I would say spending the day with José Mourinho, the manager of Manchester United Football Club, would be amazing, as it would be so interesting to see what it is like to run the biggest football club in the world and the daily dilemmas you have to deal with from the press to the players.
2. At such young ages, it's interesting to know what it was that first attracted you to the sport?
I started polo from the age of six with one of my best friends, Edward Walker, and at the time both our Dads were playing so one Sunday my Dad asked Casper West, the polo manager of the Beaufort polo club, to give me and Ed a taster lesson, and from then on I fell in love with the sport. But the main thing that attracted me to polo was the horses, I have always had a great love for these amazing animals and to be able to gallop flat out on them and for them to let you hit a polo ball around them is amazing.
3. Do you have a wardrobe staple that is essential to your personal style?
Kind of, my wardrobe basically consists of about five pairs of jeans and a dozen polo shirts. Although, I am very excited about the new HPActive Range! I think the very British and ‘classic’ look of the clothes from Hurlingham Polo 1875 is one reason I’m happy to represent the brand, and also to represent a brand that is so heavily involved in polo is very cool.
4. What is your favourite TV-show at the moment?
To be honest I don’t really watch that much TV, but every Saturday night I love watching Casualty. Also I sometimes watch the new programme on Sky called Riviera.
5. Which artist can you always be caught listening to?
It’s more of a song but Despacito by Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi featuring Justin Bieber.
